White Motorcycle Helmet Due to the rise in gas prices over the last several years, Americans have begun purchasing motorcycles at previously unheard of rates. In 2007 alone, nearly one million motorcycles were sold in the United States. And while the recent economic downturn may have slowed the rate of new motorcycle sales slightly, motorcycles continue to offer the most economic option for thrifty motorists looking to save on gas prices.

Unfortunately, with the increase in sales has come an increase in the rate of motorcycle theft. If you ride a motorcycle or intend to purchase one, you should protect yourself and your investment by learning the details of motorcycle theft and what you can do to prevent it.

In 2008, 60,763 motorcycles were reported stolen in the United States. In 2007, a total of 62,206 were reported stolen, and in 2006, the total reached 63,828. Across these years, the top five motorcycle makes targeted by thieves have been Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki, Kawasaki and Harley-Davidson. Amongst these, sports bikes have seen the highest frequency of theft. Some estimates place the rate of theft of sports bikes at a whopping seven times the rate of theft of all other motorcycles. Not only this, but the unfortunate fact is that most stolen motorcycles are never recovered.

Insuring Your Motorcycle
Standard auto insurance policies do not cover motorcycles. To legally operate a motorcycle on public roads, it must be insured with a motorcycle insurance policy. Motorcycle insurance policies offer forms of coverage similar to traditional auto insurance policies. A motorcycle insurance policy can include liability coverage, personal injury coverage, property damage coverage, uninsured motorist coverage, and more. Shop around to find what coverages and rates different providers offer, and make sure you purchase a policy that will provide you with coverage for any major costs you are likely to incur.

How Much Does Motorcycle Insurance Cost?
The cost of a motorcycle insurance policy will usually be far below a comparable auto insurance policy. Comparable motorcycle plans can even cost as little as half as much as a comparable auto plan. A number of factors determine a policy's rate. These include engine size, model year, and yearly mileage. Some providers may also offer discounts for having a clean driving record or having taken a motorcycle safety course. Additionally, if you already have some other form of insurance, your current provider may offer a multiple product discount. Talk with your agent and find out what they can do for you.
